DTF...What is it?
In today’s vast digital landscape, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information on crafting techniques. From forums to tutorials, everyone seems to have a different opinion, often leaving you with more questions than answers. When it comes to DTF (Direct to Film) transfers, the same confusion applies—what is it exactly? Let's set the record straight with a simple intro, what crafters really need to know about DTF, and why it’s gaining traction.
Direct to Film (DTF) is a printing method used for transferring designs onto fabric and other materials. It involves printing a design onto a special PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) film using water-based pigment inks. The design is then coated with a special adhesive powder and cured before it can be transferred to fabric.
Here are the key steps of the DTF process:
- Print on Film: The design is printed in reverse on a clear film using specialized DTF ink (typically white ink as the base layer).
- Powder Application: A heat-activated adhesive powder is applied to the printed design while it’s still wet.
- Curing: The film with the powder is heated to melt the powder and cure the ink.
- Transfer to Fabric: Once delivered to you, the cured design is placed face-down onto fabric and transferred using a heat press.
- Peeling: After pressing, the film is peeled away, leaving the design on the fabric.
Benefits of DTF:
- It works on various fabric types, including cotton, polyester, and blends.
- There is no need for pretreatment, unlike direct-to-garment (DTG) printing.
- Produces vibrant colors and fine details.
- The resulting design has a soft feel and high durability.
DTF has become popular due to its ease of use, affordability, and versatility across different materials and projects.
